Typically you have an equation of state for the problem which relates various thermodynamic quantities such as pressure, temperature and volume, number of particles, entropy, enthalpy, etc... all of these are related by various equations and/or differential relations. To properly calculate anything you first have to decide which variables are independent and proceed from that basis. It's all implicit function theorem and engineers need that course.
