Oct 15, 2019 at 12:13 | comment | added | David E Speyer | The point is not that anyone will choose one of the bottom 4 options; the point is that the student who comes up with $2x^2+C$ should see $2+C$ and $2x^2$ sitting in the distractors, so it is less obvious that the $2$ is wrong.
Oct 15, 2019 at 12:11 | comment | added | David E Speyer | What about $x^2+C$, $x^2$, $2x^2$, $2x^2+C$, $2$,$2+C$, $1$, $1+C$? Your answers 2, 3 and 4 reveal that there are three errors you can imagine. Imposing these errors in all possible combinations gives 8 answers. If you don't do this, the savvy student chooses the reply at the center of the options. I don't actually endorse this as a good question, but I do often feel that I don't have enough answer options on the scantron because of this binary explosion.
