How did you check for understanding and retention when you helped them demonstrate how the formula was deduced? i.e. How do you know they were thinking the right way as opposed to just speaking the right words and writing the right symbols? | |

The point is to indeed make them use the method without brute force. Avoiding the "listing all solutions" process (for some materials only) is one of the subgoals listed. | |
